A protein skimmer is a very useful product for the fish heavy marine aquarium. It is a device that brings aquarium water into contact with a large concentration of air bubbles. This process removes organic pollutants before being broken down by bacteria, it has the effect of lowering waste levels. By effectively short-circuiting the normal oxidisation of waste it slows the accumulation of nitrates and phosphates which can have many benefits, such as less frequent water changes.

Deltecs MCE hang on skimmers are the ultimate hang on protein skimmers suitable for tanks up to 600L (model dependant, see specifications below), their flexible design allows them to hang on almost any brand of aquarium. They can also be mounted inside or hanging on to a sump for a tidier looking setup. The MCE skimmers have an in-built media chamber for activated carbon or similar to assist in the removal of toxins. Media cannot be loose, it must be placed in a sock or an optional media box is available separately.

The Deltec philosophy is that you require 400 to 500 liters of air per hour for every 1000L of water to achieve optimum skimming. The MCE600 is therefore suitable for aquariums up to 600L and the MCE400 for those up to 400L. Deltec claim that testing they have carried out has shown that their skimmers produce 2 to 4 times the air volume of most other skimmers on the market rated for the same aquarium volume.
