- Size: It grows to a maximum length of about 2.7 to 3 inches (7–8 cm), making it one of the smallest species in the hawkfish family.
- Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Maldives to Samoa, and from the Ryukyu Islands down to the Great Barrier Reef.
- Natural Behavior: It inhabits coral reefs at depths of 10–20 meters. Because it lacks a swim bladder, it does not swim continuously. Instead, it “perches” on rocks and corals, watching its surroundings like a hawk.
- Tank Size: Requires a minimum tank size of 30 gallons (approx. 110 liters) with plenty of live rock for perching and hiding.
- Temperament: Classified as semi-aggressive. It is highly territorial toward other hawkfish and similarly shaped bottom-dwellers. Keep only one per tank unless you purchase a mated pair.
- Reef Compatibility: It is reef-safe with caution. While it will not harm corals, it is a predator to small invertebrates. It will likely eat ornamental shrimp, small crabs, and very small, peaceful fish.
- Diet: A carnivore that is easy to feed. It readily accepts frozen foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped krill) as well as high-quality carnivore pellets and flakes.
