- Size: It grows to a maximum length of about 10 to 12 cm (4 inches).
- Appearance: It features a reddish-brown body covered with electric-blue spots and lines, with bright orange markings around its snout and tail base. Like other tobies, it has a false “eyespot” near its dorsal fin to confuse predators.
- Natural Range: Found in the tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific, ranging from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. They typically inhabit clear coral reefs and coastal drop-offs at depths of 6 to 50 meters.
- Tank Size: Requires a minimum tank volume of 110 liters (30 gallons) with plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
- Diet & Tooth Maintenance: They are omnivores that feed on algae, sponges, and small invertebrates. In an aquarium, they must be fed hard-shelled foods (like unpeeled shrimp, krill, clams, and snails) to naturally wear down their constantly growing beak-like teeth.
- Reef Safe Rating: Not reef safe. They will actively nip at stony corals, soft corals, invertebrates, crabs, snails, and ornamental shrimps.
- Toxicity & Safety: Like other pufferfish, its tissues contain tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin. It should never be kept with aggressive tank mates that might try to eat it, as this can poison the predator or release toxins into the water if the fish is severely stressed or dies.
