The Chaetodon falcula is one of the most attractive butterflyfish available for marine aquariums. Native to the Indian Ocean, this species is admired for its distinctive black saddle-shaped marking across the back, contrasting with its bright yellow body and fine vertical striping.
Growing up to 20 cm (8 inches), the Saddleback Butterflyfish requires a spacious, well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Although it can adapt well to captive diets, it should be offered a varied menu including high-quality marine flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and sponge-based foods.
The Chaetodon falcula is generally peaceful toward other fish but may not be reef-safe, as it can nip at soft and stony corals, feather dusters, and some sessile invertebrates. It is therefore recommended for fish-only marine aquariums or reef systems where coral compatibility has been carefully considered.
